Customer facing time always learns me the most about what's important with analytics. Customers tell me the real use cases; the real issues they face when it comes to obtaining insights in their companies performance. A recent trip to Latin America brought me another example a a perfect analytics use case; this time for cloud analytics.
8:00 AM Monday Morning
Situation report customer: part of a global organization with a large scaled business intelligence roll-out. This roll-out is heavily governed so our customer needs to align with its rules and processes directed at global level. Core source system is SAP BW that eventually will be migrated onto SAP BW HANA though timing is not set yet. Our customer's users today massively use BEX Query designer, yet feel the need for more data-visualization and -exploration capabilities.

Requirements for insights by the customer: lot's of BW Infoproviders and massive numbers of Bex queries today; this is confusing for the end users. Using Bex, end users open the info providers and queries and the first thing they do is ............... download to Excel and proceed with creating their "own truth" ... the result is:
different ways of analyzing and defining KPI's
different data outcome which confuses the management teams. People start loosing trust in the data
a massive load to the network and storage since everybody is repeatedly downloading the same content
limited to no governance
strong limitation on data visualization capabilities, data mashup and data enrichment
non existing interactivity from the user with the reports and visualizations
Users require a proper method of visualization, data mash-up and data-enrichment capabilities. They also require the agility to easily blend their data with non-corporate data; the rumor is around that a competitor company is starting up in their country. To stay ahead and be prepared for this competitive penetration, my customer requires online insights and the ability to really quickly respond to any available information which keeps them in the lead.

Global architectural approach: the current ICT architecture is driven at global level. Though a lot of advantages (consistency, alignment etc), this model also brings a level of inertness: requesting a full new BI architecture and/or a SAP BW migration onto HANA takes time that my customer - the competitor is coming in soon - does not have. They want to respond, and respond now.

We discuss, brainstorm, pro's and con's .............. if we could find a solution that:
requires no impact on ICT infrastructure
connects online to SAP BW
delivers second-to-none data mashup and visualization capabilities
has the flexibility to easily handle the upcoming BW on HANA migration
.... then we might have a solution .......... We propose SAP BusinessObjects Cloud that on top of the above, brings predictive analytics capabilities for segmentation and the embedded business planning module to our customer can directly connect to their SAP BPC environment too. Important is that our customer doesn't have to worry about any infrastructure. Just subscribe to the cloud analytics environment, connect to their source data and insights can be generated. Furthermore our customer is prepared for the migration of SAP BW onto HANA expected within a year. Insight made with cloud analytics on short term, can easily be reused when BW migrates to BW on HANA in the future; stories do not have to be rebuilt!

We shake hands with the customer ........ they, with a feeling of relief, trust and confidence in the future ...... we, with the passion for our products and the warm feeling one gets when being able to really help somebody.
